Amazon Webservices

Neev is one of the very few companies in India, which pioneered in an initiative to migrate a J2EE Web2.0 portal to Amazon EC2 & S3. The client was planning an aggressive marketing campaign and anticipated a huge traffic influx to their website. They were apprehensive about the existing server being able to handle the huge flow and were looking for a solution that provides a ideal tradeoff between scalability and cost effectiveness.

Neev, after an extensive research proposed Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) web service. It was an ideal choice, as it provides scalable capacity for both computing and storage space thereby reducing the economics of computing as you pay only for the capacity that you actually use.

The solution provided to the client took into consideration both Load Balancing and High

Availability concerns of the client. The solution consisted of the following set up.

  • Two front-end apache servers that redirect incoming requests to a High Availability (HA)proxy server.

  • The HA proxy server in turn re-directed traffic to three application servers running on Tomcat.

  • A database server that acted as Master DB for all incoming requests from the application server.

  • Amazon S3 service for hosting all user uploaded data to the server.

  • All common resources hosted on a separate shared Network File System (NFS) mount point

  • A separate SVN server and a file system for backup files storage.
